Coconut shells for horse’s hooves

Monday July 13. WFH: DAY 90. 8.30 am: A communion. 9.00 am: A sluggish start to the day. Following some as yet unsolvable app-failure problems and inbox pruning, I opened up my writing again for an hour. The dark clouds and incessant rain subdued the study. I resisted reaching for the desk lamp. My brain moved like treacle, but at least the ‘goo’ travelled in the right direction.

1.30 pm: I photographed the printed text to the first part of the account that I’d dealt with on Saturday, converted the jpeg to a raw format and then played the file on audio software. A sample was extracted and then slowed down 15x. The resultant sonority was like that of a fulsome chord played on a large church organ.

I did the same to the phrase ‘at prayer’. This, in turn, produced a sound that was almost choral. The solution to the ‘religious’ evocation was now closer. 4.30 pm: I listened again to the radio samples that I’d extracted from my multiband analogue radio on Saturday.

7.30 pm:

I returned to file cards, notes, and a Bible that I’d had to lay aside and have remained aside for twelve months. This time last year, I’d begun working my way through every chapter of the book, beginning at Genesis, annotating each reference to sound. This was with a view to commencing research on a book about sound in Scripture.
