About

I am a sound- and visual-art practitioner, and also a historian of art, visual culture, and sound art. My research field is the visual and sonic culture of religion. I explore non-iconic attitudes to visualization and sonic articulations of religion within Protestant Christian, supernaturalist, and working class traditions, principally. In so doing, the work engages visual, textual, and audible sources, theological and cultural ideas, and systemic and audiovisual processes.  Presently, I am Emeritus Professor at the School of Art, Aberystwyth University. Further information is available on my personal website: John Harvey, and Sound website.

Intersections of Sound, Image, Word, and Life provides occasional articles on these topics, viewed independently and in conjunction with one another. They’re written from the perspective of a practitioner, historian, and teacher. For the most part, however, Intersections represents a weekly and personal account of my life in relation to art. In this respect, it continues the earlier Diary (September 15, 2018 — June 30, 2021) and Diary (July 16, 2014 — September 4, 2018) posts.
